Sydney Atrial Fibrillation Workshop

On Wednesday, 25 September, the ACvA Arrhythmia Clinical Theme gathered in Sydney for a face-to-face Atrial Fibrillation workshop bringing together clinicians, researchers and consumers to explore key areas in atrial fibrillation (AF) research and management.

Early Detection & Screening of AF: We explored the latest interventions aimed at identifying AF early, focusing on the underlying biology of pre-AF, the potential for new therapies, and the role of wearables and opportunistic screening.  Detection in First Nations Peoples needs to be improved, ensuring that future solutions address this important community.

Secondary Prevention & Management: Participants examined strategies for lifestyle modification, which is essential in preventing AF recurrence. We also discussed the triaging of patients for ablation and other advanced management techniques, ensuring the right treatment is provided at the right time.

Preventing the Sequelae of AF: AF is linked to severe complications such as stroke, cognitive decline, and heart failure. We delved into the mechanisms behind these connections and discussed strategies to reduce these risks, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

Data & Monitoring: A crucial part of the conversation was understanding the current state of data collection and monitoring in Australia. Improving how we measure and track AF is key to enhancing both prevention and treatment strategies moving forward.

These discussions are vital to shaping the future of AF research and improving the health of Australians living with this condition. We’re excited to continue driving collaboration and innovation in this space!

A big thank you to Prash Sanders, Jonathan Kalman, Liza Thomas, Melissa Middledorp and Jamie Vandenberg for chairing the sessions.

We’d also like to thank Julie McMullen, Kylie Gwynne, Adrian Elliot, Peter Kistler, Ken Butcher, Rajiv Mahajan, Jonathan Ariyaratnam and Tessa Morgan for presenting, and all attendees for their invaluable contributions to discussions throughout the day.
